Phthalates and parabens are used in many mass-produced candle brands for the same reason they are used in cosmetics – for binding and shelf life purposes. They are also found in many fragrance oils large companies use to scent candles. Before we go into why these chemicals are bad for you here's some general background information on what these chemicals are.
What are phthalates?
Phthalates are a family of industrial chemicals used in cosmetics, fragrances, and other consumer goods. Phthalates are used in products as a binding agent, ensuring that cosmetics, for example, won’t separate as easily and the ingredients will stay dispersed throughout the product during its shelf life. Phthalates can also be used to help scents linger longer in the air.
What are parabens?
Parabens are classed as a preservative. They are added to products to increase their shelf life and to prevent any mold or bacteria from forming. You will find parabens in many cosmetic products such as shampoo, conditioner, moisturizer, deodorant, make-up, and fragrances. They’re also sometimes included in food to add to the shelf life.
Both chemicals are used in factories to chemically enhance the product's shelf-life and shipping durability.
In recent years, research has found that exposure to these chemicals can interfere with the body's hormones, most notably reproductive hormones such as estrogen and testosterone. The possible health risks could include chronic diseases, cancers and a host of developmental disorders, and fertility problems.
